Dissociative Disorders

What is it?

Dissociative disorders are a group of mental health conditions that involve disruptions or breakdowns in a person’s memory, identity, perception, or sense of self. These disorders often develop as a response to severe trauma, stress, or abuse, serving as a psychological defense mechanism to escape painful experiences.

Dissociation can feel like being detached from oneself or the environment, as if observing life from the outside. While occasional dissociation is common for many people (such as daydreaming), dissociative disorders are more severe and interfere with daily life, relationships, and functioning.

The primary types of dissociative disorders include:

  • Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID): Previously known as multiple personality disorder, this involves the presence of two or more distinct personality states.
  • Dissociative Amnesia: Sudden memory loss of important personal information, often related to trauma.
  • Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder: A persistent feeling of being detached from one’s body (depersonalization) or experiencing the world as unreal (derealization).

Our Treatment

At our psychiatry hospital, we take a comprehensive and personalized approach to treating dissociative disorders, focusing on helping individuals reconnect with their thoughts, emotions, and sense of self.

  1. Psychotherapy:
    • Trauma-Focused Therapy: Helps individuals process and address the root causes of dissociation, particularly unresolved trauma.
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Assists in understanding and managing dissociative symptoms while developing healthier thought patterns.
    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Provides skills for emotional regulation and coping with stress.

  1. Medication:
While there are no medications specifically for dissociative disorders, antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications can help manage co-occurring symptoms such as depression or anxiety.
  2. Grounding Techniques and Mindfulness:
Learning techniques to stay present in the moment can reduce dissociative episodes and provide a sense of stability.
  3. Support Groups:
Connecting with others who share similar experiences can foster understanding, reduce isolation, and promote healing.
  4. Individualized Care Plans:
Every individual’s experience with dissociative disorders is unique. We tailor treatment plans to address specific needs, ensuring the most effective support.
