Attachment Disorders

What is it?

Attachment disorders are mental health conditions that develop when children are unable to establish healthy emotional bonds with their primary caregivers, typically due to neglect, abuse, or inconsistent care during early childhood. These disorders can impact emotional development, social interactions, and relationships throughout life.

There are two primary types of attachment disorders:

  • Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD): Children with RAD show little emotional responsiveness, avoid seeking comfort, and may appear withdrawn or detached from others.
  • Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED): Children with DSED display overly friendly or indiscriminate behavior, even toward strangers, often as a result of unmet emotional needs during early development.

If left untreated, attachment disorders can persist into adulthood, leading to difficulties in forming healthy relationships, managing emotions, and trusting others.

Our Treatment

Treatment for attachment disorders focuses on building trust, fostering emotional security, and improving the individual’s ability to form healthy relationships. At our psychiatry hospital, we provide a safe and nurturing environment to facilitate healing and development through the following approaches:

  1. Therapy for the Individual:
    • Play Therapy (for Children): Encourages children to express their emotions and develop trust through creative play.
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps individuals identify negative thought patterns and develop healthier emotional responses.
    • Trauma-Focused Therapy: Addresses the root causes of attachment issues by processing traumatic experiences.

  1. Parent-Child Therapy:
    • Attachment-Based Therapy: Works to strengthen the bond between caregivers and the child by encouraging trust and emotional connection.
    • Parent Training: Teaches caregivers how to provide consistent, responsive, and nurturing care that fosters emotional security.

  1. Family Counseling:
Family therapy helps create a supportive home environment where the child or individual can feel safe, understood, and valued.
  2. Medication:
While attachment disorders themselves are not treated with medication, symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or hyperactivity may be managed with prescribed medications as part of a broader treatment plan.
  3. Support Groups:
Support groups for caregivers or individuals with attachment disorders can provide guidance, shared experiences, and encouragement on the journey to healing.
